Technologist, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Decarbonization

 

InnoTech Alberta is seeking an Operations Technologist to support our Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Decarbonization service offering, based out of our Calgary office. This position is in our Environmental Services Division. The Environmental Services Division is staffed by an expert team of applied scientists, engineers, and technologists that strive to be the preferred partner for addressing complex environmental, natural resource, and greenhouse gas management challenges, bridging the gap between existing environmental research and real-world solutions. This position will be responsible for helping to manage the Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre, supporting business development, preparation of technical proposals, project implementation, analysis, interpretation, and communication of project results, collaboration with colleagues, clients, and external experts, with a focus on carbon capture and utilization technology development and research.

Reporting to the Manager of the Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Decarbonization team, this position will play a dual role, supporting the day-to-day management of the Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre (ACCTC) and contributing to research development and implementation in a technologist role. The successful applicant will be accountable for (but not limited to) the following: 

 

  • Technical
    • Monitor and manage equipment associated with ACCTC, including carbon capture systems.
    • Identify and respond to equipment performance issues.
    • Collect, compile and document experimental data and perform data processing and analysis.
    • Organize, monitor, and maintain experiments or portions of experiments; design simple experiments; support pilot scale experiments.
    • Conduct experiments and assist with analysis of experiments.
    • Operate, maintain, test, calibrate and provide equipment that conforms to specifications detailed in applicable standards.
    • Provide operational and technical guidance to junior and intermediate technical staff.

 

  • Project/Office Management
    • Identify and acquire materials, services, facilities, equipment and supplies for experimental projects.
    • Review and assist in preparing project proposals and costing.
    • Monitor, report and present progress, data and/or results of experiments to project leader.
    • Managing contractor relationships for the provision of services at the ACCTC.

 

  • Safety and Quality Management
    • Actively contribute to safety programs and culture, including creation of safe work procedures, hazard assessments, inspections and communication to staff and clients.
    • Maintain facility and lab organization and cleanliness (general housekeeping).
    • Handle, store and dispose of chemical and waste materials.
    • Work with fire monitoring system and security contractors for ACCTC.
    • Manage facility access and facility safety program.

 

  • Business Development/Stakeholder Relationship
    • Assist with engagement and follow-up for new and existing clients or stakeholders.
    • Participate and provide input at technical project meetings and follow-up on action items.

 

Educational Requirement:

  • Diploma in Chemical, instrumentation, electrical, materials, or mechanical engineering.

Experience and Qualifications we are looking for:

  • 5-7 years of experience in application of diploma training (chemical, instrumentation, electrical, materials, mechanical).
  • Experience working in a research lab or pilot scale facility preferred.
  • Class 5 Drivers License.

 

Skills Required

  • Ability to be flexible and responsive to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and development. 
  • Comfortable working within an industrial setting and familiarity with industrial hazards and processes.  Experience in an industrial environment would be considered an asset.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to understand equipment process flow (eg. P&ID interpretation).
  • Willingness for hands-on work and ability to perform physically demanding tasks in support of pilot-scale facility operation.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills as well as the ability to write technical data reports.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize workflow.
