Manager, Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity

 

InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Manager to lead the delivery of client services and execution of programs from the Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity team.  With a focus on supporting Alberta’s energy and manufacturing sectors, the Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity team works closely with industrial clients to de-risk advanced material and manufacturing technologies, evaluate material performance, and provide applied research services to enable solutions for asset reliability and integrity issues such as wear, corrosion, material degradation, and fouling.  Specifically, the team provides the following services:

 

Advanced Materials and Asset Reliability Management:

  • Materials Performance Assessment and System Integrity Solutions - Assess, characterize, and validate materials, coatings, and deposition techniques for industrial applications including:
    • Assessment of component corrosion and wear resistance in actual field and simulated pilot and bench-scale environments including mechanism validation, integrity monitoring, mitigation technologies evaluation, and asset longevity solutions
    • Development and provision of specialized material analytical methods to evaluate material performance in support of client innovation pursuits and solutioning requirements

Develop, evaluate, and validate advanced NDT technologies for material performance monitoring in niche applications

  • Multi-Phase Flow Monitoring - Evaluate and validate technologies for characterization of pipeline multi-phase flow regimes and dynamics, flow control and metering, leak detection, and pipeline component integrity monitoring leveraging our advanced flow loops of different scale and computational modeling capabilities
  • Novel Materials Development - Develop novel materials, coatings, and manufacturing techniques to improve asset integrity, improve equipment performance, and lower environmental impacts

 

Advanced Metal Manufacturing:

  • Additive Manufacturing - Advance and validate additive manufacturing technologies and processes for fabrication of components for harsh environment applications
  • Sustainable Manufacturing - Improve equipment performance and lower environmental impacts through advanced and sustainable manufacturing
  • Welding Quality and Productivity - Enhance welding quality and productivity through advancement and de-risking of welding and inspection technology application, adaptation, and deployment and supporting procedure development

Reporting to the Director of Advanced Materials & Energy Pilot Operations, the Manager is responsible for leadership of Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity staff activities and provides oversight of day-to-day client service delivery from the team, ensuring optimal scheduling of workforce, assets, and pilot-scale facilities to meet client needs.  The Manager further oversees team business development efforts and is responsible for financial management, planning and reporting activities.   Contribution to the development and execution of corporate and Division strategic, business, and operational plans and internal/external stakeholder engagement are also key functions of the role.

 

This position will be responsible for, but not limited to, execution of the following:

Client Service Delivery

  • Responsible for oversight of day-to-day client service delivery within the team and the development and execution of projects, programs, and initiatives in alignment with defined Division priorities, including:
    • Ensuring program/project deliverables, timelines, resources and budgets are defined and effectively managed, records management and audit requirements protocols are adhered to, stakeholders are effectively engaged, reports are prepared and delivered, performance targets and deliverables are achieved, and project management practices and standards are understood and consistently applied,
    • Delegating tasks and projects to the appropriate staff members to develop skills and effectively manage client service delivery workload,
    • Managing and forecasting workforce and asset allocation ensuring effective and optimal scheduling and prioritization,
    • Managing team’s pilot-scale and lab facility capacity including required development, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning to meet client needs.
  • Ensure consistent application of workplace health and safety standards and practices

Business Development

  • Oversees team business development and revenue continuity efforts, including:
    • Contributing to identification and pursuit of business development opportunities,
    • Monitoring and analyzing industry market intelligence, industry best practices, and emerging trends
    • Preparing and presenting business cases and recommendations as required
    • Supporting Division’s branding and market positioning initiatives and promoting InnoTech initiatives and priorities.

Leadership and People Management

  • Responsible for the management and leadership of team staff activities, including:
    • Ensuring establishment of team and individual goals and objectives and effective performance management and mentorship of staff,
    • Monitoring productivity, work quality and workloads, deliverability of results, and adherence to policies and standards,
    • Managing recruitment, career / skill development, training, and succession planning activities,
    • Developing strategies to attract, engage, develop, and retain qualified staff,
    • Leading through change process/events,
    • Facilitating and developing a productive, innovative, and collaborative work environment.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for management of team financials, including:
    • Development and monitoring of team operational, capital, and staff budgets,
    • Preparing financial forecasts and variance reporting,
    • Managing and authorizing expenditures within budget and approved limits,
    • Ensuring timely submission of required internal and external reports and financial documents.

 

Strategic and Business Planning & Execution

  • Contributes to the development and execution of corporate and Division strategic, business, and operational plans.
  • Responsible for the execution of applicable elements of the Division operational plans as pertains to the Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity team

Stakeholder Relationship Management

  • Pursues, develops and maintains relationships with external stakeholders, industry colleagues, government representatives, consultants and outside service providers
  • Initiates and coordinates collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders, peers and colleagues to understand business activities and issues, collaborate on projects, programs and initiatives, and identify opportunities to leverage resources, remove roadblocks and influence outcomes.

 

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree or PhD is preferred) in Materials Science, Engineering (Chemical, Materials, or Mechanical), or in a related scientific or engineering field is required; equivalent work experience will be considered; Engineering candidates must possess Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and be registered or eligible for registration with APEGA.
  • Minimum 7 years of technical, business, and project/program management experience is required with strong program and project management and delivery skills.
  • Minimum 5 years of managerial experience is required, preferably in an innovation environment or applied research and development setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and working collaboratively with others is required with strong people management, leadership, and coaching skills.
  • Working experience with labor relations is required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain client and stakeholder relationships.
  • Strategic and business planning skills.
  • Strong operational planning skills, priority management approach, and delegation abilities.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, listening and interpersonal skills to convey concepts and information.
