Technologist, Energy Pilot Facilities & Operations

 

InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Technologist to join its Energy Pilot Facilities & Operations team.  With a focus on supporting Alberta’s energy and manufacturing sectors, the Energy Pilot Facilities and Operations team works in collaboration with the Research and Development teams within the Energy Services Division to de-risk and evaluate technologies and provide applied research solutions for industrial clients.  The team operates as a resource pool with staff allocation to projects initiated by R&D teams and direct responsibility over the development, operation, and management of the Division’s experimental and pilot-scale facilities in both Edmonton and Devon locations.  The portfolio of services supported by the team is diverse and focuses on industry’s needs pertinent to development and optimization of new recovery technologies for unconventional oil and gas (bitumen, heavy oil, shale oil/gas), enhancement of bitumen extraction and processing from oil sands operations, evaluation of advanced material and asset integrity solutions, and de-risking and deployment of advanced manufacturing processes.

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Energy Pilot Facilities & Operations team, the technologist will be based in InnoTech Alberta’s facilities in Devon, AB, and will support ongoing research & development projects primarily aligned with advanced material and asset integrity solutions and de-risking and deployment of advanced manufacturing processes.  The successful incumbent will work closely with other senior technologists within the team and be exposed to a wide variety of tasking including but not limited to support of bench-scale corrosion experimentation, operation and maintenance of autoclaves for evaluation of material specimens under severe service conditions, use and evaluation of advanced manufacturing technologies, and construction, commissioning, and operation of pilot-scale facilities including flow loops for simulation of erosion and corrosion phenomena.    

The successful incumbent will be responsible for (but not limited to) the following:

  • Technical & Project Execution
    • Collect, compile and document experimental data and write data summaries
    • Assist with development, organization, monitoring and maintenance of experiments
    • Assist with interpretation and reporting of data and results of experiments
    • Assist in researching equipment and methods for use in an experiment
    • Assist in operation, maintenance, testing, calibrating and providing equipment that conforms to specifications detailed in applicable standards
    • Order, track, receive and maintain chemical and consumables (e.g. equipment, supplies, etc.) inventories
    • Contribute to proposal development as requested
    • Develop and advance expertise and technical services marketable to both our internal and external partners
    • Participate in technical project meetings
  • Safety and Quality Management
    • Maintain lab organization and cleanliness (general housekeeping)
    • Handle, store and dispose of chemical and waste materials
    • Adhere to safety, quality control, and quality assurance procedures, processes, and regulations
    • Assist in conducting hazard assessments, safety inspections, and watching for safety hazards
    • Assist in generating safe work procedures, responding to, and implementing audit safety items and changes to quality audit items

 

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Diploma in Chemical, Materials, or Mechanical Engineering Technology (or a related field)
  • Comfortable working within an industrial setting and familiarity with industrial hazards and processes.  Experience in an industrial environment would be considered an asset.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to understand equipment process flow (eg. P&ID interpretation)
  • Willingness for hands-on work and ability to perform physically demanding tasks in support of pilot-scale facility operation
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills as well as the ability to write technical data reports
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Flexible to complete a variety of tasks
  • Ability to prioritize workflow
  • Class 5 Drivers License
