Technologist, Welding and Additive Manufacturing

 

InnoTech Alberta is seeking an innovative and collaborative Welding and Additive Manufacturing Technologist to join its Energy Pilot Facilities & Operations (EPFO) team. This position will be responsible for providing technical leadership and client support for existing equipment including manual and automated welding, laser powder bed fusion and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) equipment as well as evaluating and testing new equipment.  This role will also support the development and management of projects and programs, design of experiments, and testing protocols. 

 

With a focus on supporting Alberta’s energy and manufacturing sectors, the EPFO team works in collaboration with the Research and Development (R&D) teams within the Advanced Materials and Monitoring Division to de-risk and evaluate technologies and provide applied research solutions for industrial clients.  The team operates as a resource pool with staff allocation to projects initiated by the R&D teams in both Edmonton and Devon locations.  The portfolio of services supported by the EPFO team is diverse and, in addition to the development of advanced manufacturing processes, members of the team also support the evaluation of advanced materials, optimization of new recovery technologies for unconventional oil and gas, and the enhancement of bitumen extraction and processing from oil sands.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Energy Pilot Facilities & Operations, this role will focus on enhancing the division’s welding and additive manufacturing initiatives using InnoTech Alberta’s welding equipment, laser powder bed fusion equipment, WAAM system, and any client-recommended equipment. Specific related responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

 

Technical

  • Support projects that utilize InnoTech Alberta’s manual and automated welding equipment and auxiliary components.
  • Utilize additive manufacturing equipment to support research projects.
  • Organize, monitor, and maintain experiments or portions of experiments; design simple experiments; support pilot scale experiments and the development of testing protocols.
  • Build and/or modify equipment for projects and for material testing applications.
  • Evaluate alternative industrial equipment to support projects.
  • Act as a technologist to support internal stakeholder requirements.

Project Management

  • Manage required test protocols to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of work.
  • Identify products and resources required to complete experimental projects.
  • Research equipment and methods for use in an experiment.
  • Assist in monitoring budget, expenses, and time allocations.
  • Review and assist in preparing moderately complex project proposals and cost quotations.
  • Monitor, report and present progress, data, and results of experiments to the project leader.

Safety & Quality Management

  • Maintain lab organization and cleanliness (general housekeeping).
  • Handle, store and dispose of chemical and waste materials.
  • Actively contribute to conducting hazard assessments, self-safety and cross-audit safety inspections, creating safe work procedures and ensuring that the workplace remains free of safety hazards.

Business Development/Stakeholder Relationship

  • Communicate procedures, processes and results to internal and external clients, market technical expertise and technical services internally and externally.
  • Assist with engagement and follow-up for new and existing clients or stakeholders.

The position will be primarily based at InnoTech Alberta’s facility in Devon, AB with occasional travel to the Edmonton facility.

 

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

Education and Experience

  • Technologist diploma in Advanced Welding Technology, Welding Engineering Technology, or similar.
  • Minimum 2 years of technical experience related to welding, additive manufacturing, metallurgical engineering, and related technologies is desired; lesser experience will be considered when combined with education.
  • Direct experience in welding and/or additive manufacturing in a research or industrial setting preferred.
  • Experience with CAD software such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Autodesk, etc. would be considered an asset.

  • Excellent creative problem-solving skills and ability to apply technical solutions from multiple industries and sectors to move projects forward.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and proactive.
  • Willingness for hands-on work and ability to perform physically demanding tasks in support of welding and additive manufacturing projects.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks, competing agendas and client demands.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills as well as the ability to write technical data reports.
  • Class 5 Drivers License
