Alberta Innovates is seeking a Director, Performance Management & Evaluation (PME). The position will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing the performance management and evaluation framework for large initiatives and programs that Alberta Innovates is delivering.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops and executes corporate impact, performance management and evaluation strategies and methodologies to monitor, measure and assess the performance and evaluation of Alberta Innovates investments
  • Consults with clients and supports the delivery of PME services on large initiatives
  • Manages day-to-day operations
  • Ensures evaluations are quality reviewed and completed on time and within budget by:
      • Monitoring and evaluating data collection, analysis and reporting methodologies and tactics employed
      • Analysis and reporting
      • Ensures adherence to PME strategies, practice standards, and providing training/support
      • Facilitates capacity and capability enhancement, delivering training courses and workshops, and establishing in-school education program set up and delivery
  • Provides guidance, subject matter expertise and counsel to leadership/senior managers on PME management activities
  • Ensures processes/methodologies are understood by gathering information, presenting results & managing expectations
  • Manages process/evaluation methodology improvement projects and initiatives by:
      • Researching industry best practices and trends
      • Presenting recommendations
      • Managing project deliverables and resources
  • Monitors PME data, activities and services provided, and establishes operational and workflow processes and procedures
  • Ensures compliance with practices, standards and regulatory requirements
  • Identifies opportunities for continuous performance improvement, updates standards, policies and procedures, and coaches staff to ensure methodology/practice changes are implemented
  • Manages program/business unit budgets and reporting activities, authorizes expenditures within approved budget, explains variances, and ensures timely submission of required internal and external reports and financial documents
  • Develops relationships with internal stakeholders, peers and colleagues in order to:
      • Understand business priorities
      • Facilitate operational information gathering
      • Provide progress reports and training
      • Facilitate management of deliverables
  • Develops and maintains relationships with external stakeholders, industry colleagues, government/educational institution representatives and business partners to:
      • Identify training and engagement opportunities
      • Remain current on best practices and trends
      • Promote Alberta Innovates mandates
  • Manages staff activities and monitors productivity, work quality, and workloads by:
      • Consulting with clients across a diverse portfolio of programs and large partnered initiatives
      • Establishing team goals, objectives, and conducting performance review activities
      • Delegating and directing work
      • Ensuring adherence to policies and practice standards
      • Development of staff skills by using coaching ability and identifying training opportunities
      • Managing recruitment





  • Masters Degree in Social Sciences, Business, Health, Agriculture, Environment or related field. PHD is optional
  • Minimum 3-5 years of managerial experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years social science, research methodology, statistical analyses and project management experience
  • Experience working within a client driven consultation model or environment
  • Experience developing and implementing performance and impact management systems at an organizational and provincial level. Federal and international experience an asset
  • Experience in working with senior technical and management professionals from government, industry, environmental agencies and other stakeholders is preferred
  • Ability to develop and maintain stakeholder relationships
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Strategic problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Planning and priority management skills
  • Exceptional verbal, written, listening and interpersonal skills to convey concepts and information
  • Financial management and business case development skills
  • People management and coaching skills
  • Canadian Evaluation Society profession designation is considered an asset
