Research Ethics Nurse

Alberta Innovates is seeking a nurse to work with our Research Ethics team to provide ethical review of adverse events and site audits across the province of Alberta. The Research Ethics Nurse will be involved in research staff support and patient counselling when health concerns or issues arise. This position will provide external site audits and investigations when required, which includes random audits for regulatory compliance and patient safety. The Research Ethics Nurse will also be responsible for the coordination of the disability management and modified work program. This position does require a lot of travelling within Alberta.

 

This is a contract position with Alberta Innovates.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Research Site Audits

  • Conduct site audits for regulatory compliance with international regulatory requirements as per the study origin (Health Canada, Alberta Legislation, European Union, Food and Drug Administration United States).
  • Review and audit patient study files to ensure patient safety and research protocol adherence. Audits are to be conducted when issues are identified.
  • Provide patient consultation and liaison with study team to resolve or refer research related concerns.
  • Identify and provide emergency response services when adverse events are found during study related treatments thought the reportable events area within the IRISS (Institutional Research Information Services Solution) platform.
  • Coordinate and communicate audits and reports with fellow Ethics offices (University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of British Columbia, and the University of Calgary).

 

Office Reporting

  • Create and maintain accurate records, including confidential health records of site audits as required by legislated.
  • Escalate patient death and protocol deviations that have caused a serious adverse event to the Director of Research Ethics.
  • Provide Board Level reports and statistical information quarterly.

 

Emergency Call Line

  • On a rotating basis provide weekend and holiday coverage for study teams and patient safety concerns using the IRISS system and cellular emergency call line.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Nursing Registration, Valid practice permit and Insured to practice
  • College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) or College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) certification required
  • 5 years nursing experience
  • Proficient in health and nursing knowledge with experience within oncology, acute care, pathophysiology, and palliative health areas.
  • Knowledge with electronic reporting systems.
  • Experience working within the IRISS platform and in a regulatory environment will be an asset.
