Intermediate Researcher, CCU & Decarbonization (Hydrogen)
InnoTech Alberta is seeking an Intermediate Researcher to support our Hydrogen service offering, working from our Edmonton office. This position will report to the Hydrogen Lead within the Carbon Capture Utilization & Decarbonization (CCUD) Team in our Environmental Services Division. This position will be primarily responsible for business development, preparation of technical proposals and contracts, project development and management, analysis, interpretation, and communication of project results, collaboration with colleagues, clients, and external experts, with a focus on hydrogen technology development and research. Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to effective collaboration with a diverse, multidisciplinary team will be crucial to success in this position.

The Environmental Services Division is staffed by an expert team of applied scientists, engineers, and technologists that strive to be the preferred partner for addressing complex environmental, natural resource, and greenhouse gas management challenges, bridging the gap between existing environmental research and real-world solutions.
This role will focus on growing InnoTech’s hydrogen technology development services. The successful incumbent will be accountable for (but not limited to) the following:
- Use and apply innovative technical expertise and capabilities to:
- Support hydrogen technology development and validation to address gaps, challenges, and opportunities in hydrogen energy systems.
- Conduct preliminary technoeconomic and life cycle analysis for early-stage hydrogen technologies
- Support design and execution of innovative projects, analyze results, and communicate information to support client needs in hydrogen technology development.
- Identify and develop valuable applications for different forms of elemental carbon produced by methane pyrolysis, a promising clean hydrogen production technology.
- Support the development, execution, and management of applied research and capital projects through:
- Research and project management of the Elemental Carbon Market Assessment Joint Industry Project (JIP) and subsequent follow-on projects.
- Execution, reporting, and project management of InnoTech’s Hydrogen Centre of Excellence capital projects.
- Client engagement to identify high priority challenges and associated projects to drive initiatives forward.
- Preparation and delivery of presentations at public events (e.g., conferences, trade shows, seminars, webinars, corporate town halls)
- Advancement of service offering priorities via market research, client engagement, and program conceptualization and implementation.
- Development of new projects including preparation of proposals and budgets to solicit external and internal funding.
- Building partnerships with internal and external collaborators to execute projects.
- Project management responsibilities such as communicating with clients, coordinating project activities and resources, managing timelines, and budget forecasting.
- Consultation on projects across all Divisions at InnoTech to enhance multi-disciplinary capabilities.
- Negotiation and arrangement of contractual agreements with clients.
- Adherence to safety policies and procedures, including hydrogen-specific safety considerations.
Educational Requirement:
- Bachelor’s degree (Master or PhD degree preferred) in an applied science discipline with an emphasis on chemical, mechanical, materials, or petroleum engineering, chemistry, physics, or related disciplines.
- Current membership or eligibility for membership with APEGA (EIT or GIT), ACPA (CIT), ASET (C. Tech., C.E.T., R.E.T, or P.Tech.), or other professional designation associated with the candidate’s education.
Experience and Qualifications we are looking for:
- Minimum of 3 years with a relevant degree, or minimum of 5 years with a relevant diploma, in a position including applied research in an engineering or scientific discipline. Additional experience in the following areas is a benefit:
- GHG emissions reduction technology development,
- Evaluation of the commercial feasibility of innovative, early-stage technologies,
- Work on multi-disciplinary teams,
- Balancing scientific/technical, market, and business development requirements to achieve success.
Skills Required:
- Applied research in an engineering or scientific discipline
