Additive Manufacturing Engineer

InnoTech Alberta is seeking an innovative and collaborative Additive Manufacturing Engineer to join its Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity team to support the group’s applied research and industrial client projects. This position will be responsible for providing technical leadership and client support for the group’s powder atomizer, laser powder bed fusion equipment and WAAM system including the development and management of projects and programs, design of experiments and testing protocols, and analysis and interpretation of experimental results.

Reporting to the Manager of Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity, this role will focus on enhancing the team’s additive manufacturing efforts using InnoTech Alberta’s powder atomizer, laser powder bed fusion equipment, and WAAM system. Specific related responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Use and apply innovative technical expertise and capabilities to:
    • Lead projects that utilize InnoTech Alberta’s additive manufacturing and powder production equipment
    • Design project experiments and testing protocols, analyze and interpret data and experimental results, and draw conclusions
    • Design and build equipment for projects and for material testing applications
    • Serve as a mechanical engineer resource for internal and external stakeholders
    • Serve as an additive manufacturing specialist and collaborate with other groups to enhance additive manufacturing adoption at InnoTech Alberta and at our client sites
  • Develop and manage the execution of applied research and development projects including:
    • Define, execute, and monitor project schedules, budgets, and scopes of work
    • Manage project outcomes to ensure timely delivery and high quality
    • Prepare technical and progress reports
    • Engage with clients and project stakeholders to provide progress updates

The position will be based primarily in InnoTech Alberta’s facility at Edmonton Research and Development Park but occasionally may work at InnoTech Alberta’s facility at Devon.   

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Education and Experience Requirements:
    • Bachelor degree in Materials, Mechanical, Chemical, Welding, or Metallurgical Engineering, plus minimum of 6 years progressively responsible related experience or
    • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) with directly related postgraduate education, may be substituted for experience
    • Eligible for registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). Consideration may be given to Master’s degree or PhD holders with E.I.T. status
    • Minimum of 2 years of technical and project/program management experience related to materials, mechanical, welding, or metallurgical engineering and related technologies is desired; lesser experience will be considered
    • Direct experience in additive manufacturing in a research or industrial setting
    • Experience with CAD software like Fusion 360, Solidworks, Autodesk, etc.

    • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
    • Strong written communication skills, demonstrated through technical reports and proposals
