Science Lead (ABMI), Environmental Services

 

InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Science Lead to provide leadership in the execution of activites within the Science Center of the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) and project management and execution within the Environmental Services division of InnoTech Alberta (InnoTech). With a focus on supporting Alberta’s environmental sector, InnoTech’s Environmental Services division offers support to clients in areas of biodiversity monitoring & ecosystem management, reclamation & native plants, water management, and carbon capture, conversion & utilization. InnoTech has a long-standing partnership with the ABMI, and is involved in ABMI’s governance and operations, providing a broad range of services to support long-term biodiversity monitoring in Alberta.  In addition to oversight of day to day delivery of applied research projects at InnoTech, the Incumbent will be responsible for participating on the ABMI Management Team to support delivery of the ABMI program.

Job Details

The Science Lead is accountable for the execution of activities within the Science Center of ABMI and project managemnent and execution within the Environmental Sciences division of InnoTech.  The candidate will also be accountable for strategic integration between ABMI and InnoTech Alberta.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing and executing the ABMI’s science strategy to ensure the ABMI and partners, including InnoTech are well positioned to take a leadership role in the provision of monitoring needs for Alberta to support land use and management decisions.
  • Supporting and facilitating the use of environmental monitoring data, tools, knowledge and technologies in initiatives such as land-use planning, academic research, cumulative effects management, land and water stewardship, climate change adaptation, regional biodiversity management and ecosystem services assessment.
  • Maintaining, evaluating and optimizing business processes within ABMI and InnoTech while providing strong project management oversight to ensure on time, on budget delivery of projects and grant deliverables.
  • Initiation, execution and project management of applied research projects within both the Environmental Impacts team at InnoTech Alberta and the Science Centre at ABMI.
  • Providing scientific guideance on ABMI monitoring activities, and ensure scientific analyses are based on all available, high quality information, and meet stakeholder and funder needs.
  • Provide people leadership and oversight for the staff within the Science Center of ABMI.
  • Managing resource utilization, capacity, and scheduling along with facilitating career development for direct reports through coaching and active performance management.
  • Working with both the InnoTech Leadership and ABMI’s Executive office to develop integrated solutions to ensure the partnership is recognized internally and externally.

 

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in an Environmental discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and working collaboratively with others
  • Preference will be given to those with knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, and knowledge of reclamation, remediation and/or revegetation challenges in Alberta
  • Ability to work and conduct research independently, as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project management skills
  • Strong written communication skills, demonstrated through technical reports and proposals
  • Experience of working in an innovation environment to balance the science/technical, market, and business development requirements
