Senior Research Technologist (12 month term)


InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Senior Technologist on a casual 12 month basis to provide technical support to a team through the mechanical design, fabrication, and implementation of high temperature/high-pressure physical models, pressure vessels, and other unique experimental setups to support InnoTech Alberta's research and development efforts.

The Energy Pilot Facilities and Operations (EPFO) team is part of the Energy Services Division with the purpose of optimizing the operation of the Division’s unique experimental and pilot facilities using the team’s multi-discipline skillsets. The focus of the experimental facilities and operation technologists has a very wide breadth and encompasses many of research activities carried-out within the Energy Services Division. Using its full mechanical, instrumentation, and process control capabilities, the team leads the custom design, fabrication, and operation of various benchtop, laboratory, and semi-field scale experimental pilot facilities.

The successful incumbent will be accountable for (but not limited to) the following:


  • Mechanical design of specialized experimental apparatuses for use in applied research of thermal in-situ heavy oil and bitumen recovery processes. Must possess extensive knowledge in the design of scaled high pressure/high temperature sandpack models, visual cell models, overburden pressure vessels, and associated mechanical components (piping, fittings, support brackets, etc.)
  • Facilitating the design registration of the pressure vessels, Category H fittings, and vessel repair/alterations through the ABSA. This may include preparing dimensional drawings, enlisting consultants to perform ASME code calculations, organizing material test reports, enlisting non-destructive testing providers, and assisting ABSA inspectors.
  • Proficient in the use of 3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Alibre, etc.) for preparing a range of mechanical concept to dimensional fabrication drawings.
  • Certified as a Journeyman Machinist with experience in fabricating components specific to high pressure/high temperature and solvent-compatible experimental apparatuses.
  • Research, compare and recommend new experimental procedures and methods.
  • Interpret and present data and results of experiments to clients.
  • Compile, draft and make significant contributions to technical reports and/or presentations.
  • Lead innovative processes in technical and operational areas.  
  • Keeps up-to-date with technical advances.


Project Management


  • Identify, source, and acquire products, services, facilities, equipment and people for experimental projects.
  • Monitor and make changes, in conjunction with project leaders, to project schedules and costs.
  • Help design project management schedule.
  • Meet expectations on complex/technically challenging project activities.


Business Development/Stakeholder Relationships


  • Market technical expertise and technical services internally (within organization).
  • Provide business leads and actively seek new clients for existing product offerings.
  • Participate and provide input at technical project meetings and follow-up on action items.
  • Create and support development of proposals.
  • Regularly communicate with internal and external clients regarding projects, procedures, processes, and technical service results.


Supervision and Mentorship


  • Act as a role model and mentor to fellow technologists by exhibiting technical excellence in field of expertise, attention to detail and strict adherence to QMS.
  • Supervise, train and provide guidance to technical staff.



  • 1 – 2 year Technical Diploma in Manufacturing, instrumentation, electrical, materials, mechanical or related field
  • Minimum 9 years of related technical experience

Annual Salary Range: $76,272 - $101,040
