Job Details

The Senior Researcher is accountable for project and program development, management and execution within the Environmental Services division of InnoTech. The Environmental Services Division strives to be the preferred partner for addressing complex environmental, natural resource management and greenhouse gas management challenges. Our collaborative work with the Government of Alberta and industry has contributed to the province’s reputation as a world leader in environmental monitoring, integrated data analysis, risk analysis, and carbon capture and storage technology. Our teams develop and validate processes and technologies that enable more efficient, effective, and economical environmental monitoring and management. We achieve this through identification, evaluation, monitoring and validation of solutions to address industry needs in environmental impacts and risk evaluation, integrated monitoring, asset retirement and environmental management. We support industrial decarbonization toward net-zero emissions through development, validation, and demonstration of carbon capture and utilization and methane reduction technologies.

Key areas of interest for the Environmental Services division relevant to this position include: contaminant fate and behaviour in the environment; de-risking of technologies and processes for remediation and environmental monitoring; asset decommissioning and reuse; site assessment, remediation, and reclamation; and restoration and sustainability. We incorporate leading edge approaches into our projects, including the development and de-risking of digital tools.  

As part of this role, the Senior Researcher will develop strong client relationships and conceptualize solutions with clients to enable business and funding opportunities. Immediate responsibilities will include leading the management and implementation of the Soil Sterilants program (https://innotechalberta.ca/services/soil-sterilants-program/). This applied research program involves multiple partners and clients working to support more accurate environmental site assessment, risk assessment and management, and remediation of sites impacted by soil sterilants in Alberta.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing technical leadership for remediation and reclamation-related research projects.
  • Leading client engagement to identify high priority challenges and associated projects to drive remediation and reclamation-related initiatives forward.
  • Advancing divisional priorities through market research, client engagement, and program conceptualization and implementation.
  • Developing new projects and programs by preparing proposals and budgets for presentation to external clients to solicit funding and building partnerships with internal and external resources to execute projects.
  • Applying technical capabilities to design and execute innovative projects and programs, analyze resulting data to draw meaningful conclusions, and communicate those findings effectively to clients and stakeholders.
  • Acting as a convenor to coordinate collaborative multi-stakeholder initiatives aimed at complex environmental challenges.  Coordinate project outcomes including budgets, deliverables, and communication on behalf of the team.
  • Implementing work plans, including organizing and overseeing project teams and managing budgets and resources.
  • Providing consultation on projects within the Division and with others at InnoTech to enhance multi-disciplinary capabilities.
  • Negotiating and arranging contractual agreements with clients.
  • Coaching and mentoring junior colleagues in technical and business development areas.

 

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in an Environmental discipline with emphasis in remediation and reclamation-related disciplines. 
  • Current membership or eligibility for membership with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (P.Ag) or APEGA (P.Eng)
  • Minimum of 8 years relevant experience in the Alberta Environmental industry.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in:
    • applied research; specifically the design of research investigations at bench-, meso- and field-scale to identify solutions for environmental challenges in Alberta;
    • assessment of environmental impacts from anthropogenic activities and understanding of high priority challenges in Alberta;
    • integration of multidisciplinary elements (soils, hydrology, contaminant management, vegetation, etc.) and tools (e.g., GIS, modeling, etc.) into project conceptualization and execution; and 
    • balancing science/technical, market, and business development requirements to achieve success
  • Key technical skills and knowledge include:
    • remediation, reclamation and revegetation practices
    • environmental risk and impact assessment
    • application of broadly-sourced technical solutions to address client needs
    • soil and plant interactions
    • multidisciplinary capabilities in an environmental context (i.e., general understanding of various environmental disciplines)
    • experimental design and analysis at various scales and in both controlled and field environments
  • Key business skills:
    • Proficiency in working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including facilitating partnerships across diverse stakeholder groups
    • Strategic and systems thinking competency to support ongoing development of Divisional priorities
    • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and to motivate others
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project management skills
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, demonstrated through technical reports and proposals, and presentations of research outcomes
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail that reflect ability to prioritize and perform when facing multiple tasks, competing agendas and heavy client demands

    • Experience coaching and mentoring junior staff
