Senior Technologist, Bio-Industrial Services Pilot Facilities and Operations


The Bio Industrial Services Division at InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Senior Technologist for the Pilot Facilities and Operations team to lead and execute projects in our Engineered Composites Production Centre. The Senior Technologist will design and execute testing programs relevant to Engineered Composites materials, participate within a larger team in the operation of pilot plant facilities and business development activities including the preparation of proposals for clients, and product production and testing parameters.  It is expected that the candidate will become proficient in the operation, configuration, and capabilities of the pilot and laboratory equipment within the respective service areas with a primary focus on engineered composite wood panel production facilities and a selection of related fibre processing equipment.

Our Pilot and Facilities Team, with operations in Edmonton and Vegreville, comprises specialized facilities and expertise in biotechnology, biomass feedstock development, bio-processing, bio-conversion, thermo-chemical treatments and biomaterials engineering that help industry design, develop, demonstrate, utilize and commercialize new bio-material production processes.  The team also provides experimental services related to the development and production of engineered composite materials.  This work is generally associated with wood and agricultural fibre and accompanying value-added products. Key clients and partners served by this group include forest products and agriculture industries, SMEs, entrepreneurs, government agencies, non-government organizations and academic institutions.

Reporting to the Manager of Bio Industrial Services - Pilot Facilities and Operations, the Senior Technologist will be accountable for, but not limited to, executing the following:


  • Execute standard and non-standard testing programs (and refine as necessary) relevant to engineered composite materials produced at InnoTech or received from clients.
  • Coordinate and execute maintenance and calibration programs for all the testing equipment within the engineered composite laboratory that can include re-certification requirements.
  • Assist with the development of production methods very specific to the clients requirements and in consultation with other senior technologists, researchers, and in certain situations direct interaction with the client.
  • Operate various process and mobile equipment (forklift), screening, blending, forming and weighing of materials for the Panel Lab as well as the fibre processing areas. 
  • Conduct business development and engage stakeholders for new projects & initiatives and ultimately identify, propose, and execute projects for clients
  • Provide direction to technologists regarding operations, process improvements and equipment requirements
  • Identify and respond to the needs of clients, to lead the direction of work in the engineered composites field, and communicate results effectively
  • Improve the service area technical expertise & expand the area capabilities
  • Assist in the delivery of on time, and on budget experimental & testing services
  • Provides technical and scientific insight for clients and business partners


Qualifications and skills we are looking for:


  • A technical diploma or a degree in engineering or a wood related science.
  • Eligible for registration with a professional designation associated with candidate’s education.
  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience.
  • Experience in a wood panel board mill or other similar engineered composite material production with knowledge of the wood products and composite structural materials such as oriented strand board (OSB), medium- and high- density fibreboard (MDF/HDF), particleboard, and various wood laminate materials and the associated chemicals.
  • Experience with the testing methods from different standards organizations such as CSA, ASTM, ANSI, JAS, JIS, EN, CCMC.
  • Experienced and proficient in the use of wood cutting tools and equipment required to accurately prepare wood product samples for testing.
  • Knowledge and experience in applied research would be considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to manage tasks, projects (including budgets), resources, and timely delivery, and interpersonal and organizational skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively lead others, manage workflow and delegate tasks 
  • Strong oral and written communications and the ability to produce technical presentations and reports
  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to work sites as required
