Technologist, Environmental (Field/Lab)

 

InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Technologist, Environmental (Field/Lab) to join its Environmental Impacts team to support delivery of client services from the Environmental Services Division. The position will be based out of Edmonton, AB. The Environmental Services Division strives to be the preferred partner for addressing complex environmental, natural resource management and greenhouse gas management challenges. Our collaborative work with the Government of Alberta, stakeholders, and industry has contributed to the province’s reputation as a world leader in environmental monitoring, integrated data analysis, risk analysis, and carbon capture and storage technology. Our teams develop and validate processes and technologies that enable more efficient, effective, and economical environmental monitoring and management. We achieve this through identification, evaluation, monitoring and validation of solutions to address industry needs in environmental impacts and risk evaluation, integrated monitoring, asset retirement and environmental management. We support industrial decarbonization toward net-zero emissions through development, validation, and demonstration of carbon capture and utilization and methane reduction technologies.

Reporting to a Supervisor within the Environmental Impacts team, the technologist will collaborate on a broad array of projects, focused mainly on reclamation.

Key areas of interest for the Environmental Impacts team relevant to this position include contaminant fate and behaviour in the environment; de-risking of technologies and processes for remediation and environmental monitoring; site assessment, and reclamation; and restoration and sustainability. We incorporate leading edge approaches into our projects, including the development and de-risking of digital tools. 

The successful incumbent will support ongoing and future activities within the team, contributing to lab and field-based projects, including those completed at our Vegreville site. 

 

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Environmental sampling and data collection in field, lab and greenhouse settings including soil and water sampling, plant identification, and habitat measurements
  • Contribution to the development, organization, and execution of experiments, including participation in proposal development
  • Contribution to the analysis, interpretation, and reporting on experimental data
  • Preparation, maintenance, operation, and management of field equipment and vehicles
  • Operation, maintenance, testing, and calibrating equipment to meet applicable research requirements and standards
  • Maintenance and management of lab facilities, chemical inventory, and samples archive
  • Uploading and management of data from various loggers and field data collection systems
  • Designing and constructing field and lab data collection systems
  • Management of aquatic and above-ground mesocosms
  • Understanding and applying ecological and/or chemical knowledge in an applied research setting
  • Develop expertise and technical capabilities that support our service offerings
  • Use your ability to problem solve and think creatively to broaden the team’s technical expertise & expand its capabilities
  • Interact directly with clients in collaboration with colleagues (e.g., researchers, other technologists)

 

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Diploma or Degree in an environmental discipline related to reclamation
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in the environmental industry; preference will be given to candidates with experience in applied research or environmental consulting
  • Comfortable working in both lab and field settings
  • Ability to perform strenuous field work in challenging and remote conditions
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) and ability to travel to remote locations in Alberta
  • Experience or willingness to learn to operate field vehicles (e.g. snowmobiles, off-road vehicles, trailering)
  • Aptitude for learning safe and reliable operation of field sampling equipment
  • Commitment to safety and willingness to fully participate in a comprehensive safety program
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Analytical thinking, creative problem solving, troubleshooting, and diagnostic capabilities
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365
  • GIS and/or statistical analysis skills are considered an asset
