Intermediate Technologist, Bio-Industrial Services R&D

 

InnoTech Alberta is seeking an Intermediate Technologist to join our Bio-Industrial R&D team in Vegreville, Alberta. The intermediate technologist will support more senior staff in the development, organization, monitoring of experiments and the maintenance of operations equipment predominately associated with agricultural materials and operations.

Working under the direct supervision of scientists and senior technologists, the intermediate technologist will be responsible for a variety of duties focused on crop research in laboratories, greenhouses and growth chambers. Secondary roles include supporting agricultural small plot experiments, and operating instruments and equipment associated with industrial scale fibre processing and material agglomeration. The successful applicant will be accountable for (but not limited to) the following:

  • Planting, maintaining, and harvesting diverse crop plants including common field crops (canola, wheat, barley, pulses) as well as cannabis and hemp in greenhouses, growth chambers, and field research plots.
  • Isolating, culturing, purifying, and storing microbial organisms including fungi, bacterial and viruses
  • Systematically and accurately recording written and image data on computers (spreadsheets and databases) or paper, and maintaining physical and electronic data archives
  • Assisting in biochemical laboratory procedures including DNA extraction and HPLC
  • Participating in safety and regulation-related tasks, such as preparing or reviewing safe work procedures, and ensuring compliance with laboratory biohazard and plant pathogen safety standards
  • Operating various process and mobile equipment including farm machinery and numerous benchtop instruments
  • Minor routine servicing of laboratory equipment and performing minor troubleshooting and repair tasks

 

          Employment Status: Permanent

          Hours weekly: 36.25

          Classification: TB

          Pay Grade: 07

          Annual Salary range is $60,619 - $75,831

 

Educational Requirement:

  • Degree or technical diploma in related science or technology field, preferably microbiology, agriculture, or biochemistry.  Direct and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Other relevant post-secondary education with experience is considered an asset.

Experience and Qualifications we are looking for:

  • One year of related technical work experience, preferably in growing plants in greenhouses or growth chambers
  • Experience and knowledge of farm equipment and/or experience in the operation of industrial equipment is a strong asset.
  • Must be comfortable working in laboratory or farm settings. Familiarity with industrial hazards and processes is an advantage.
  • Minimum Class 5 license
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs 

 

 

Skills Required:

  • The successful candidate will complete diverse tasks within the various Bio-Industrial Pilot Facilities & Operations groups in field, pilot plant, or laboratory environments. The ability to work in a collaborative team environment is crucial. Competence in operating standard Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel) is required, experience in using databases and laboratory instrument control applications is an asset. Manual lifting, shoveling, and housekeeping with the ability to endure long days and varied conditions while collecting high quality data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to write technical data reports.
