Senior Researcher, Bio-Industrial Research & Development Team, (Bio-Thermo-Chemical Focus Area), Vegreville AB


The Bio Industrial Services Division at InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Senior Researcher for the Research and Development team. The successful incumbent will develop and lead projects related to anerobic digestion and the production and upgrading of biogas with the goal of facilitating the deployment of new technologies and processes that will help build commerce in Alberta. The Senior Researcher will identify, pursue, and lead business development activities, prepare proposals for clients, design experiments and testing programs and actively direct technologists in the execution of projects.  The position will require collaboration and interaction with colleagues, clients and external experts.

Our R&D Team, with operations in Edmonton and Vegreville, comprises specialized facilities including our biowaste laboratory that consists of custom pilot plant equipment and batch culture facilities, which have been used to perform process studies, methane potential tests and chemical characterizations and analysis on various types of digestible organic waste ranging from waste waters to high solids materials.  Key clients and partners served by this group include industrial entities, funding agencies, SMEs, entrepreneurs, government agencies, non-government organizations and academic institutions.  Beyond the pilot and laboratory operations we often support groups and use our data to inform and develop process integration studies where primary processes are combined with anaerobic and aerobic treatment systems for unique feedstocks.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Bio Industrial Services – Research and Development, the Senior Researcher will identify, pursue, and lead business development activities, prepare proposals for clients, design experiments and testing programs and actively direct technologists in the execution of projects. The successful incumbent will develop proficiency in the operation, configuration, and capabilities of the respective service areas.  Specialized equipment and facilities include a bio-methane potential laboratory, high rate, complete mix & dry batch anaerobic digestion pilot plants, aerobic treatment testing facilities, and a host of analytical instrumentation associated with anaerobic digestion, composted materials and biogas characterization. The Senior Researcher will be accountable for, but not limited to, executing the following:


  • Designing, managing, analyzing, and reporting results research and testing conducted in laboratory of pilot facilities.  The work will be a mixture of office work and hands on laboratory/pilot work, primarily dealing with organic waste of various forms and origins.
  • Overseeing operations of our biowaste laboratory and pilot operations with a keen focus on method development, improvement and quality control
  • Organizing and overseeing laboratory analyses for substrate characterizations.
  • Conducting process verification studies and integration studies that commonly require incorporating laboratory data into mass, heat and energy balances, process flow diagrams and economic analyses that focus on practical and efficient integration of the anaerobic digestion systems with the base industry, process improvements, materials testing and evaluation, equipment selection,
  • Conducting carbon intensity calculations to help ascertain the value of integrating biogas processes in various jurisdictions.
  • Project development and critical evaluation of laboratory results and projects that focus on the development of novel equipment and novel process improvements and applications related to the anaerobic digestion field that may be tested in a pilot plant setting
  • Specification and selection of specialized equipment and processes that incorporate efficiently into existing operations, integration studies and the development of mass and energy balances.
  • Proposal and report writing, managing technical staff, interacting with clients and developing new business. Build support internally and among industry, government and academic stakeholders for research projects and initiatives
  • Conducting business development and engage stakeholders for new projects & initiatives and ultimately identify, propose, and execute projects for clients
  • Preparing and submitting strong funding applications and research proposals to funding agencies, private industry, and industry associations
  • Providing direction to technologists regarding operations, process improvements and equipment requirements
  • Identifying and responding to the needs of clients, to lead the direction of work in this field, and to communicate results effectively
  • Providing oversight and guidance surrounding equipment maintenance and equipment operational issues.
  • Improving the service area technical expertise & expanding the area capabilities, and developing new business related to the unique infrastructure and facilities available at Innotech Alberta
  • Providing management oversight to ensure the on time, on budget delivery of experimental & testing services
  • Providing technical and scientific insight for client and business partners



Qualifications and skills we are looking for:


  • The ideal candidate will possess an advanced degree with training and experience in engineering, environmental, biological and/or chemistry processes related field; a M.Sc. or PHD is beneficial.
  • Experience and/or an educational background in the field of anaerobic and/or aerobic treatment systems is necessary.
  • Candidates with experience in cross-disciplinary research including areas of agglomeration and organic fertilizer development would be considered an asset.
  • Eligibility for registration as a professional engineer or other professional designation associated with the candidate’s education would be considered an asset.
  • A minimum of five years of related experience.
  • Familiarity or experience associated with equipment selection, mass, heat and energy balances, process flow diagram development, and techno-economic analyses would be considered a strong asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience in applied research would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects including budgets, resources, timely delivery, and interpersonal and organizational skills are essential.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a challenging and changing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively in several different team environments.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide others, manage workflow and resources, and delegate projects and tasks 
  • Strong oral and written communications ability including developing high quality technical presentations and reports
  • A valid Driver’s license with the ability to travel to work sites as required
