Senior Communications Lead

Alberta Innovates is seeking a Senior Communications Lead to join our Stakeholder Relations and Planning team. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing our internal and leadership communications that enhance the employee experience, change communications, and help grow our culture. This role partners closely with senior leadership to advise and support on their internal and external communications to craft clear, compelling, and consistent narratives that elevates Alberta Innovates brand and reputation. In collaboration with internal teams the Senior Communications Lead will help articulate the story of Alberta Innovates and demonstrate the value it brings to Alberta’s innovation ecosystem.

This is a permanent position and will be based out of our Edmonton office. This position is eligible for hybrid work.

Job Details

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and manage internal communications strategies that build awareness, understanding, and support for operational priorities and change initiatives.
  • Identify and address internal business program needs across multiple channels, tools, and applications.
  • Create and maintain content for internal sites to optimize employee experience and culture.
  • Partner with business leaders to deliver clear, consistent, and compelling messages across diverse media.
  • Coach leaders on communication tactics to strengthen alignment and foster two-way dialogue with employees.
  • Craft engaging messaging and oversee internal channels for clarity and impact.
  • Provide coaching on communication style, tone, and delivery for presentations and high-profile events.
  • Lead executive messaging during organizational changes, crises, or sensitive situations to maintain trust and transparency.
  • Partner with HR and project teams to integrate culture strategy into communications and promote a unified, high-performance message.
  • Support planning and execution of internal events that enhance employee experience and culture.
  • Research, write, and edit annual reports, presentations, and materials for board, government, and public audiences.
  • Prepare analytics and internal metric reports to drive continuous improvement in communications.
  • Support departmental dashboarding and reporting initiatives.

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in digital media, communications, public relations, marketing, information technology, or a related field
  • Eight+ years related experience, focused on internal, government and/or leadership communications
  • Demonstrated diplomacy with the ability to establish a high level of rapport and communicate effectively with people in a variety of positions, at all levels
  • Experience working with senior leadership with the ability to earn trust and respect as a strategic adviser
  • Demonstrated ability to focus on goals and develop strategies and tactics followed by experience in measuring and reporting on results
  • A basic understanding of government and/or the innovation and technology industries
  • Strong consulting and project management skills.
  • Make informed recommendations based on data and insights.
  • Exceptional writing skills for diverse channels (speechwriting, newsletters, reports).
  • Proactive and self-directed with minimal supervision.
  • Effective team player contributing to cross-functional projects.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
